8Dio’s 2016 Stand Out Contest – “A Partial Memory”

8Dio’s 2016 Standout Contest is here!

For this year’s contest I decided to do something a little different. I wrote a simple theme using just a single instance of 8Dio’s beautiful music box instrument and nothing else. Doing this allowed me to focus on the most basic aspects of the music: the melody, the harmony, the chords, and how they all interact. I call this piece “A Partial Memory”, as music box themes always sound sad and nostalgic to me, like I’m listening to the fragmented memories of some person far gone from this world.

New 16bit SNES-style track!

A couple of months ago the director of an RPG I’m writing the soundtrack for pitched an idea he had for a future game he wants to make. It is to be an RPG in a classic 16bit, Super Nintendo style. Although the game isn’t even in production yet, I decided to write a track using only authentic SNES sounds as a way to practice that style. This was a lot of fun to write and I hope we actually end up making this game. I’d love to write an entire soundtrack using only SNES sounds!

The track is called “Through the Bitslum!”. It has the feel of a slum district of an RPG city to me. Take a listen to here:

“Why is the Princess in a Magic Forest?!” and “ikenie” have been Greenlit!

HUGE NEWS! Both¬†Why is the Princess in a Magic Forest?!¬†and ikenie have just been Greenlit on Steam! We are in the process now of finalizing the games to get them ready to be purchased and played. I want to thank everyone for their support throughout this process (which was excruciatingly long – but, hey, that’s the life of small indie teams, I guess). Since¬†ikenie¬†has been on sale on itch.io for a while now,¬†the¬†ikenie Original Soundtrack¬†has¬†already been available on Bandcamp, but now I’ll finally be able to release the¬†Why is the Princess in a Magic Forest?!¬† Original Soundtrack¬†as well. As readers of this blog will know, that was the very first game soundtrack that I composed. The fact that the game and the soundtrack are finally about to be released is such a huge moment for me. It’s the culmination of a lot of hard work and love for composing music. I feel like I’ve grown a lot as a composer since I wrote the six pieces of music on that soundtrack, but they remain special to me since it was the first time I actually wrote music that was to be used in an actual video game. I really hope you enjoy both of these games and their music!

Tribute Album 64 (9.29.16)

I’m very happy to announce the upcoming release of a new video game music remix album I took part in, Tribute Album 64. The Nintendo 64 was released 20 years ago, so to pay tribute to this classic console, a huge number of people got together and arranged an absolutely massive number of tracks from N64 games. As for my contribution, it’s a track from a certain well-known first-person shooter from Rare…and I’m not talking about Goldeneye! That’s right, Perfect Dark. I arranged the “Institute Menu” theme, and I had a blast doing it.

The album will be released on September 29th and will be absolutely free to download. Like the page linked here to show the project some love and also stay up to date on details as they’re announced.
