Leaving Home: An RPG-Inspired Journey

Follow a group of adventurers on this RPG-inspired journey as they leave their hometown to set off on a grand adventure towards the far-off horizon. Embark on a musical pilgrimage across vast steppes, sprawling silver plains, expansive deserts, and perilous mountain passes. Visit small forest hamlets; explore the commoner’s square and fountain district of a great, towering city; advance eastward and experience the grand bazaar of a city in the sand, enter the ruins of an ancient castle, and finally arrive at the magnificent gleaming capital. A grand adventure awaits!

The music of RPGs has always been a huge source of joy for me, and much of the music I’ve composed has been inspired by it. For this album, I took a look at all of the RPG-inspired music that I had written over the past several years and discovered that I had been subconsciously weaving a grand adventure of my own. After deciding on the track order, I contacted my good friend, the amazing artist Jonathan Griffith, and had him create the stunning cover art for the album. I wanted the listener to be able to gaze at the album art as they listened and follow along on the journey from place to place. I’m thrilled to release this album and I’m so grateful for everyone who decides to go on this musical adventure with me.

Flying Caveman! An Original Album

Back in January of 2015, I was composing the soundtrack for a little mobile indie game that never ended up getting finished or released. I’ve been sitting on that collection of five tracks for three years as of this month. I was always really happy with the music and thought they worked so well together, so I figured I might as well put them out as a kind of original album rather than piece them out to different projects, or even worse, let them sit on my hard drive forever, never to be heard by anyone.

To give the music context, I decided to write out the story of the caveman who decides he wants to fly, taking him through the various environments that the music represents, and use the text as the album cover (see below).

Here is a link to the album on my BandCamp page. Enjoy!

YOMOTSU won first place in IGMC 2017!

The results just came in, and I found out that the game I scored for this year’s Indie Game Maker Contest just won first place! YOMOTSU is the third game that I’ve scored for Akumu Games, the others being ikenie and Room 42. I’m ecstatic right now and so proud of our game.

“A Place of Calm” DEMO track for Impact Soundworks

I am a longtime user and fan of virtual instrument developer Impact Soundworks’ wonderful libraries. I was recently brought on to be a beta tester for their upcoming releases. Along with testing, we also have the opportunity to write demo tracks using the instruments, which then get featured on their page. I’m happy to share with you today the demo track I wrote for their beautiful new Ventus Pan Flutes library.

My track, “A Place of Calm”, features the gorgeous Romanian Nai pan flute, which has a breathy, deep resounding voice perfect for a longing melody. I had a lot of fun writing with it. All other instruments in the track are also exclusively from Impact Soundworks (including Resonance, Celestia, and Highland Harps).

“Why is the Princess in a Magic Forest?!” will be at Tokyo Game Show 2015!

I’m thrilled to announce that Michael Brandse and I will be at this year’s Tokyo Game Show to showcase our game “Why is the Princess in a Magic Forest?!”. We have a booth in the Indie Game Area for two days, September 19th and 20th. We’ll have a five level demo, both English and Japanese versions, for you to play. If you have plans to go to TGS this year, be sure to stop by our booth and try it out.

To celebrate, I’d like to share an array of artwork and screenshots, including a first look at the front and back cover of the soundtrack that will be released the same day the game goes on sale (date still to be determined).

I will be sure to take lots of pictures at TGS and share those here later.

Special shout out to Robert Brown (http://www.rbsounddesign.com) who made all of the sound effects for the game and unfortunately won’t be able to be at the show with us.

Official Website Launched!

I’ve had a website up for quite a while now, but it was always a work in progress and not something I was particularly proud of. Today I decided to polish up the site and make it official buy purchasing a domain name.
