Flying Caveman! An Original Album

Back in January of 2015, I was composing the soundtrack for a little mobile indie game that never ended up getting finished or released. I’ve been sitting on that collection of five tracks for three years as of this month. I was always really happy with the music and thought they worked so well together, so I figured I might as well put them out as a kind of original album rather than piece them out to different projects, or even worse, let them sit on my hard drive forever, never to be heard by anyone.

To give the music context, I decided to write out the story of the caveman who decides he wants to fly, taking him through the various environments that the music represents, and use the text as the album cover (see below).

Here is a link to the album on my BandCamp page. Enjoy!

A look back at 2017 – My Year in Music

A list of all the music stuff I was involved in for 2017:

・I composed 26 tracks for an upcoming RPG called A Story of the End – Revere: Episode Dream, of which I’ve only shared three publicly. I’m really excited about all of this music!

A Story of the End – Revere: Episode Dream

・I arranged and produced my first track for a Materia Collective album, “Tavern” from ZODIAC: Final Fantasy Tactics Remixed, working with three amazing musicians who recorded live parts for me (Ian Martyn on whistle, Lori Syngajewski on clarinet, and Sam Bobinski on upright bass).

・I also contributed to two tracks on another Materia Collective album, SPIRA: Music from Final Fantasy X – Besaid Mix: as an English to Japanese translator for song lyrics on Reven’s beautiful track “Welcome to Luca”.

And as mix engineer on Connor Boyd’s awesome track, “Stranger Seymour”.

・It’s not due out until early 2018, but I arranged and produced another track for an upcoming Materia Collective release; for this one I was fortunate enough to work with nine different musicians who all recorded live parts for me (I’ll tag you all when the album drops, but you know who you are).

・I composed and released my fourth and fifth original game soundtracks (Room 42 and YOMOTSU). YOMOTSU being my first soundtrack that wasn’t self-published, but put out by a label.

・Speaking of YOMOTSU: the game won first place in this year’s Indie Game Maker Contest!

・I had the great honor of composing a demo track for Gothic Instruments (Dronar Live Strings), Sampleso (Floppytron), and three for Impact Soundworks (Ventus Pan Flutes, MOMENTUM, and Ventus Ocarinas).

・I participated in, and successfully completed, Video Game Music Academy’s 21 Days of VGM challenge.

・Despite being super busy with music for actual projects, I arranged two pieces by Yasunori Mitsuda just for fun, “Eternal Soul” from Tsugunai, and “Bonds of Sea and Fire” from Xenogears.

・Outside of soundtracks stuff, I also composed two original works just for fun, “The Commoners Square” and “The Place We Called Home”.

・I surpassed 35,000 plays on my Soundcloud!

“A Place of Calm” DEMO track for Impact Soundworks

I am a longtime user and fan of virtual instrument developer Impact Soundworks’ wonderful libraries. I was recently brought on to be a beta tester for their upcoming releases. Along with testing, we also have the opportunity to write demo tracks using the instruments, which then get featured on their page. I’m happy to share with you today the demo track I wrote for their beautiful new Ventus Pan Flutes library.

My track, “A Place of Calm”, features the gorgeous Romanian Nai pan flute, which has a breathy, deep resounding voice perfect for a longing melody. I had a lot of fun writing with it. All other instruments in the track are also exclusively from Impact Soundworks (including Resonance, Celestia, and Highland Harps).

8Dio’s 2016 Stand Out Contest – “A Partial Memory”

8Dio’s 2016 Standout Contest is here!

For this year’s contest I decided to do something a little different. I wrote a simple theme using just a single instance of 8Dio’s beautiful music box instrument and nothing else. Doing this allowed me to focus on the most basic aspects of the music: the melody, the harmony, the chords, and how they all interact. I call this piece “A Partial Memory”, as music box themes always sound sad and nostalgic to me, like I’m listening to the fragmented memories of some person far gone from this world.

New Music “That Morning in the Village”

I wrote this music with the image of a peaceful village in the early morning when everyone is waking up and beginning their day. I hoped to give it an RPG town theme feel reminiscent of 16 and 32 bit era games.

Just as “Among the Forest Creatures” was written exclusively with instruments from Forest Kingdom II, this one I only used instruments from Era II Medieval Legends 🙂

Lots of music yet to hear!

If it seems like I haven’t posted any new compositions in a while, it’s not because I haven’t been writing any. I’m busy writing for video games that aren’t released yet, so I’m not able to share the music publicly yet. I recently finished up the eighth track for a game I’m referring to as “Project 48” (just a code name until I can reveal its actual title). I’ve been working on this piece quite sporadically over the past few weeks, but I I finally finished the composition and mixed it. I got to put my new Slate (VCC and VMR) and u-he (Satin) plugins to good use.

On a related note, I just did a tally and I have written 23 tracks (even more if you count the short “jingles” for a small mobile game I’m working on) for games that aren’t released yet and that I haven’t shared publicly. For comparison’s sake, I have shared 19 tracks of non-video game music on my Soundcloud and Youtube. In conclusion, I have written more music that you haven’t heard than music that you have!

Lots of stuff to look forward to in the coming year. I can’t wait for you all to be able to finally play these games I’ve been working on.

Two brand new compositions!

“Path of the Triumphant”

A cinematic piece that begins with an intimate, mysterious piano motif played over light orchestral percussion. This segues into a brief tension filled string section which then resolves into a full triumphant orchestral finale. As the final notes of the orchestra fade the piece ends as it began with the piano motif played once more.

“The Fine Print”

A somewhat experimental piece for me in a kind of jazz style. Featuring three guitars, bass guitar, a jazz kit, piano, vibraphone, trumpet, and french horn.
