A look back at 2017 – My Year in Music

A list of all the music stuff I was involved in for 2017:

・I composed 26 tracks for an upcoming RPG called A Story of the End – Revere: Episode Dream, of which I’ve only shared three publicly. I’m really excited about all of this music!

A Story of the End – Revere: Episode Dream

・I arranged and produced my first track for a Materia Collective album, “Tavern” from ZODIAC: Final Fantasy Tactics Remixed, working with three amazing musicians who recorded live parts for me (Ian Martyn on whistle, Lori Syngajewski on clarinet, and Sam Bobinski on upright bass).

・I also contributed to two tracks on another Materia Collective album, SPIRA: Music from Final Fantasy X – Besaid Mix: as an English to Japanese translator for song lyrics on Reven’s beautiful track “Welcome to Luca”.

And as mix engineer on Connor Boyd’s awesome track, “Stranger Seymour”.

・It’s not due out until early 2018, but I arranged and produced another track for an upcoming Materia Collective release; for this one I was fortunate enough to work with nine different musicians who all recorded live parts for me (I’ll tag you all when the album drops, but you know who you are).

・I composed and released my fourth and fifth original game soundtracks (Room 42 and YOMOTSU). YOMOTSU being my first soundtrack that wasn’t self-published, but put out by a label.

・Speaking of YOMOTSU: the game won first place in this year’s Indie Game Maker Contest!

IGMC2017 Results

・I had the great honor of composing a demo track for Gothic Instruments (Dronar Live Strings), Sampleso (Floppytron), and three for Impact Soundworks (Ventus Pan Flutes, MOMENTUM, and Ventus Ocarinas).

・I participated in, and successfully completed, Video Game Music Academy’s 21 Days of VGM challenge.

・Despite being super busy with music for actual projects, I arranged two pieces by Yasunori Mitsuda just for fun, “Eternal Soul” from Tsugunai, and “Bonds of Sea and Fire” from Xenogears.

・Outside of soundtracks stuff, I also composed two original works just for fun, “The Commoners Square” and “The Place We Called Home”.

・I surpassed 35,000 plays on my Soundcloud!

YOMOTSU won first place in IGMC 2017!

The results just came in, and I found out that the game I scored for this year’s Indie Game Maker Contest just won first place! YOMOTSU is the third game that I’ve scored for Akumu Games, the others being ikenie and Room 42. I’m ecstatic right now and so proud of our game.

“Why is the Princess in a Magic Forest?!” and “ikenie” have been Greenlit!

HUGE NEWS! Both Why is the Princess in a Magic Forest?! and ikenie have just been Greenlit on Steam! We are in the process now of finalizing the games to get them ready to be purchased and played. I want to thank everyone for their support throughout this process (which was excruciatingly long – but, hey, that’s the life of small indie teams, I guess). Since ikenie has been on sale on itch.io for a while now, the ikenie Original Soundtrack has already been available on Bandcamp, but now I’ll finally be able to release the Why is the Princess in a Magic Forest?!  Original Soundtrack as well. As readers of this blog will know, that was the very first game soundtrack that I composed. The fact that the game and the soundtrack are finally about to be released is such a huge moment for me. It’s the culmination of a lot of hard work and love for composing music. I feel like I’ve grown a lot as a composer since I wrote the six pieces of music on that soundtrack, but they remain special to me since it was the first time I actually wrote music that was to be used in an actual video game. I really hope you enjoy both of these games and their music!

ikenie is on Steam Greenlight!

Back in August I wrote the soundtrack for a game called “ikenie” that was created in just one month for the 2015 Indie Game Maker Contest (IGMC). Since the contest ended, the developer (Akumu Games), has been working on getting it ready for a commercial release. There are new levels, bosses, updated mechanics, controller support, and many other enhancements. I’ve also composed a new piece of music called “Death Manor Waltz” for one of the new areas in the game.

“ikenie” is currently on Steam Greenlight and we are in the long, grueling process of waiting for it to get enough “YES” votes to be able to sell on the Steam Marketplace. So, we need everyone to check out the game’s page, watch the trailer, take a look at the screenshots, and give us a vote.

I’ll also be re-releasing the game’s soundtrack on Bandcamp as “ikenie Original Soundtrack Plus”. This new release will include all of the music from the game, including the new track “Death Manor Waltz”, a newly remastered version of “Witch’s Lair (bonus track)”, and brand new original back cover art that I had made especially for this release. The soundtrack will go on sale as soon as the game does, so look forward to that!

“Why is the Princess in a Magic Forest!?” Update

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything about “Why is the Princess in a Magic Forest!?”. Rest assured, the game is still being worked on and is getting very close to completion. Michael has been busy finalizing all of the animations for both Max (the main character) as well as the various enemies. There’s also a brand new stage select map that looks really great.

Some really big news is that we hired someone to create all of the sound effects for the game. Michael and I spoke with quite a few people and listened to a variety of demos, but in the end we ended up going with a guy named Robert Brown from Edinburgh, UK. Robert is just finishing up a graduate degree in sound design and has an outstanding portfolio of some work he did while in school. Here’s a link to his website: http://www.rbsounddesign.com/#welcome.

The two sound replacement videos he shared with us greatly informed our decision. One is a trailer for Little Big Planet that Robert replaced all of the sounds for, including re-recording the music track. The other is another sound replacement for a gameplay clip from Alien: Isolation. Again, all of the SFX in the video were made by Robert. Both projects are of exceptional quality and, if one didn’t know otherwise, could easily be mistaken for having been done by the professional teams who actually worked on the games.

In my opinion, Robert is a true professional and we are very happy to have him on our team. “Magic Forest” is getting very close to being done and Robert’s talent will help it become an even better experience for everyone who plays it.

Flying Cavemen “Desert Theme”

As I mentioned before I’m currently writing the soundtrack to a game called Flying Cavemen being developed by Deeep Games. You are a caveman that wants to fly, so the goal of the game is to launch yourself from a catapult, flap your arms, collect powerups, and try to get as much distance as you can. The game starts out in a desert setting and this is the music I wrote for that section. Take a listen!

Bird Hunter! The Game and Original Soundtrack!

I am very happy to announce that my very first game and soundtrack have been released! I joined the team at Deeep Games a couple of months ago and wrote the music and created the sound effects for a mobile game (Android only) called Bird Hunter. We have finished the game and it is out now on Google Play Store. I hope all of you with Android devices will go check it out. Enjoy!

Bird Hunter (game)

I have also released the Bird Hunter Original Soundtrack. It is available on Bandcamp for “Name Your Price” (free if you’d like). It includes the main BGM track “The Great Outdoors”, as well as all nine of the short jingles that accent the gameplay. It would mean the world to me if you’d check it out. This soundtrack is just the first of many to come, as I have more game projects in the works right now.

Thank you so much for your continued support as I embark on this crazy, musical journey to become a game composer.

Bird Hunter Original Soundtrack

Bird Hunter
With the help of your trusty blood hound, your task is to shoot the birds in order to gain points! Be conservative of your ammunition however, once it’s gone it gives the bird chance to escape! Don’t forget to be quick too! Letting a bird fly away will greatly affect your score and will reduce the multiplier.

Try your best to hit all the birds and get the highest score you can! Compete against friends and show them you’re the better hunter on the Android leaderboards and with achievements! Hitting birds consecutively will also earn you a multiplier bonus! So aim true!

Bird Hunter is a free to play game with the option to pay and support the developers/remove ads, look for the full version for more information. Don’t get left out and join the hunt today!

Disclaimer – No animals were hurt in the making of this game, however 2 turtles lost their way, a rabbit was shouted at, a duck was highly confused and several rocks were sent to counseling having received insults.

Bird Hunter

A couple months back I joined a team called Deeep Games (that’s three of the letter “e”) that was developing a handheld game similar to the classic Duck Hunt on NES. This is an original take on that game with brand new original art work and lots of fun gameplay features, such as competing with friends’ scores online, hit multipliers, and being able to shoot the dog! I wrote the background music for the core gameplay and I also wrote a number of short jingles for various parts of the game. For example, game start, round start, round end, game over, getting a perfect score, etc. Most surprising of all is that I actually created all of the game’s sound effects too. I had no experience at all with making sound effects, but I wanted to give it a shot. It turned out to be a fun experience and I think they turned out pretty good. While sound effects are not something I’d necessarily like to focus on in the future, it’s good to know that I can do it if it’s ever necessary.

Anyway, the game is almost done. It should be released in just a couple of days if all the last minute implementation goes smoothly. The game will be free to download but will have a few advertisements. There will also be a paid version available without ads. I’ll write here again with a link to where you can get the game when it’s officially out!

Flying Cavemen: Play an alpha build and hear my music!

As you know, I’ve been working on a number of game soundtracks over the past two years. All of them are still in development, so until now I haven’t been able to publicly share any of the games or their music. However, I’ve recently started working on a game called “Flying Cavemen” and the developers (Deeep Games) encouraged me to share the BGM track I wrote for the game and get feedback. I’m FINALLY sharing some actual game music with you all!

The story goes: “One day a caveman looks up at a flying dinosaur in the sky and becomes curious about flight. The caveman constructs a catapult in order to discover the secrets of flight.”

The goal of the game is to launch your cavemen from the catapult and get as much distance as you can, flapping your arms and collecting powerups to increase your stamina to continue flapping. The game is in a pre-Alpha stage with placeholder art, but the core gameplay mechanics are starting to shape up. The music itself is also just a demo and I will extend it for the final game. 🙂

PLAY THE GAME HERE! It’s a very early version, but the core gameplay is starting to take shape. You can play it right in your browser. Just wait for the page to load.

http://deeepgames.com/games/cavemen/

If you’d like, you can listen to the track below, but I encourage you to check out the alpha build of the game via the link above so you can play it and hear the music in context. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!
